I've been meaning to reply to this for a while. I tried the sample force you suggested play a quick solo game. I used a "woodlands" force instead of "gladiators" - elves, catfolk, etc. The "netters" became tangle-spell wielding druids. The woodland force really wiped out the enemy; largely, I think, because they were a little easier to play - I didn't do a very good job of concentrating the goblins superior numbers at all.
I liked the activation system a lot. I liked the simplicity of the stats. I wasn't sold on the actual fighting however. Now, I know this was made worse by playing solo, but it was hard to keep track of all the modifiers, and awkward to add them up for one side, then need to keep that number in mind while I calculated the result for the other side. Normally with this sort of opposed roll I'd just figure out the difference, on the modifiers, but because of the "kill on a double" you can't do that.
Then I'd have the totals figured out, and realize I now didn't remember which die on the table from the attacker and which was from the defender, so I wasn't sure what the effect on the loser should be. :p
So, I don't know - it just seemed a bit awkward and slow paced. Hmm.
